Community members tee off "fore" kids

Our annual Tee off "Fore" Kids Blue Ribbon Golf Classic turned out to be a wonderful event! The tournament was held at Odessa Country Club, where golfers enjoyed great food, cold drinks, and a sunny afternoon on the Links Course. Hard work from our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and golf tournament chair Kalei Prichard made it all happen. 34 teams entered the competition, including our five major CAC Champions Sponsors: W74 Oil Tools, Willbros, Medical Center Hospital, Blakely Construction, and Milford Pipe & Supply. Standard Sales Company agreed to be our Beverage Sponsor, and Sewell Ford provided golfers with the exciting prospect of winning a brand new car at the Hole in One station. Other generous donors who contributed to the event were our Birdies and Burgers Sponsors: Pemco, H & S Valve, Corrosion Specialties, and  Cheyenne Tire; along with 29 Gold and 14 Hole Sponsors. Thanks to everyone who donated items, several golfers took home awesome door prizes. To top everything off, lucky winners Chris Holcomb and Ron Lipsy will get to spend 4 days/5 nights at the 2012 Ryder Cup Tournament in Medinah, Il. We couldn't ask for a better turn-out! On behalf of the children and families we serve, Harmony Home truly appreciates everyone's support with this year's golf tournament.

Harmony Home Children's Advocacy Center is currently seeking a full-time Forensic Interviewer. This position is primarily responsible for conducting legally acceptable, video-recorded interviews of children who are alleged victims of abuse and/or neglect, or who have witnessed a criminal offense. Persons applying must possess a minimum of a Bachelors degree in related fields of practice, along with an understanding of the law, legal system, child development, and implications related to interviewing children. Experience working with diverse professionals from child protection services, law enforcement, the court system, and related community service agencies is a plus. Comprehensive training will be provided for qualified individuals as needed.

Child-friendly Courtrooms

Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas has introduced some useful tips and information for judicial consideration.

"Testifying in court is particularly stressful for children. Research has shown that the high level of stress and anxiety experienced by child witnesses can decrease children’s ability and willingness to provide complete and accurate evidence. The presence of certain factors in the courtroom can either exacerbate or ameliorate the emotional trauma of court involvement for child witnesses. "

New Child Abuse Prevention Campaign Provides Resources for Parents

A new campaign called Help for Parents, Hope for Kids has been launched by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). The movement is designed to target many of the stressors contributing to child abuse and neglect by encouraging parents to seek help. Through social media and advertisement, millions of people can relate to courageous stories of struggle and hardship that parents and children often face. With the $2,400,000 federal grant provided to raise awareness, the DFPS hopes to inspire parents all over the nation to visit www.helpandhope.org for helpful tips and resources.

It's about that time! Harmony Home is gearing up for our Annual Back-to-School Drive and we need your support. Each year we provide backpacks and school supplies to our therapy clients who are in need. Now is your chance to help our local children as we prepare them for the upcoming school year.
